Foundations for What’s Next on the Westside
New housing developments don’t appear overnight.
Long before a family receives the keys to a new home, projects move through dozens of milestones — securing funding, finalizing plans, coordinating partners, and eventually breaking ground. While every development follows its own path, each step plays an important role in creating housing opportunities and strengthening neighborhoods across the historic Westside.
Homeownership Taking Shape at Brawley Commons
At the corner of James P. Brawley Drive and Proctor Street, Brawley Commons is beginning to take shape.
The development includes 10 homes for sale across five duplexes, creating new opportunities for homeownership in the historic Westside. Construction has been underway since the beginning of the year, and today, what was once a set of plans is becoming something residents can see taking shape in real time.
Several of the homes have already been framed, with additional buildings moving into the next phase of construction.
For many families, homeownership represents more than a place to live. It offers stability, a chance to build generational wealth, and an opportunity to put down long-term roots in the community they call home.
Four of the homes will be sold through the Atlanta Community Land Trust, helping create affordable pathways to homeownership for future residents.
Planning for the Future at Proctor + Paines
While construction is underway at Brawley Commons, another project is laying the groundwork for future investment.
At the site of the former New Jerusalem Baptist Church, plans continue moving forward for Proctor + Paines, a mixed-housing development that will bring 25 multifamily units and 10 single-family homes to the community.
The project received support from the Woodruff Foundation and reflects continued investment in the future of the historic Westside.
Today, much of the work is happening behind the scenes through permitting, planning, and preconstruction efforts. These early stages may be less visible than active construction sites, but they are essential to bringing projects like Proctor + Paines to life.
When complete, the development will create new housing opportunities while continuing the broader work of investing in neighborhoods where residents can thrive.
Building Toward Tomorrow
Every project starts somewhere.
Sometimes that means watching new homes rise from the ground. Other times, it means laying the foundation for future investment through planning, partnerships, and preparation.
Together, projects like Brawley Commons and Proctor + Paines represent continued progress toward a future where more families have the opportunity to live, grow, and build their lives on the historic Westside.
