220 Sunset is a historic property associated with the Maynard Jackson family including Irene Dobbs-Jackson who integrated the Atlanta Public Library, Maynard Jackson Jr. the first Black mayor of Atlanta and was a temporary home of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. The King Center and Westside Future Fund saved this building from demolition in order to restore the property and apply for historic designation on the National Register of Historic Places.
